Cyclone Michaung Relief in Chennai & Suburbs

The severe cyclone Michaung that made landfall in Andhra on December 5th, 2023, brought very heavy rainfall to Chennai and its neighbouring areas on December 3rd & 4th as the cyclone neared India’s shoreline. The severe downpour and high winds caused flooding in the low-lying areas in and around Chennai and brought down several trees, power and communication lines, claiming 17 lives, leaving several lakh people displaced from their homes, and causing crores of property damage, severely disrupting normal lives.

As thousands of residents grappled with inundated homes and a shortage of power & essentials, SEESHA rushed with relief assistance, supplementing the government's relief efforts in the first week of December. To meet their immediate food & hygiene needs, the SEESHA disaster relief team reached out to the stranded people in flooded areas using inflatable boats and distributed relief kits, comprising dry food items, water, toiletries, sanitary pads, blankets, and other such essential items, to more than 1200 households residing in Mudichur, Taramani, Manimangalam, Selaiyur, Vyasarpadi, Vanagaram, Pallikaranai, Mugalivakkam, Tambaram, Somangalam, Naduveerapattu, and other water-logged areas in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur districts.
